BlackRock BUIDL: The Benchmark for Tokenized Real-World Assets

How the world's largest asset manager launched the first institutional tokenized fund and transformed it into living DeFi infrastructure.

1. Background and Launch

In March 2024, BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager with over $11.5 trillion in AUM,1 launched the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) in partnership with Securitize, a SEC-registered broker-dealer and transfer agent specializing in tokenized real-world assets.

BUIDL was structured as a tokenized money market fund whose underlying holdings consist of short-term U.S. Treasury bills, cash, and repurchase agreements. Each token is pegged to one U.S. dollar and distributes yield daily, with new tokens minted to investor wallets at the start of each month reflecting accrued interest.

The fund launched exclusively on Ethereum and was initially available only to qualified purchasers, defined as institutions and individuals with at least $5 million in investments, with a minimum subscription of $5 million per investor.2

Rather than attempting to replace the traditional money market structure, BlackRock and Securitize built BUIDL as a regulated, fully compliant instrument: the Securitize platform served as the official transfer agent, maintaining the master securityholder file and enforcing KYC/AML restrictions through a whitelist of approved wallets. Every token transfer requires both the sender and receiver to be on that whitelist, ensuring BUIDL operates entirely within the federal securities law framework.

This was not an experiment. From the outset it was positioned as institutional-grade infrastructure, designed to prove that the compliance rigor of traditional finance could coexist with the programmability and settlement efficiency of public blockchains.

2. Growth Trajectory

The market response was immediate and decisive. BUIDL crossed $1 billion in assets under management within weeks of launch, becoming the first institutional tokenized fund to reach that threshold.3

Growth accelerated through 2024 and into 2025, with the fund reaching approximately $2.9 billion in AUM by mid-2025, at which point it commanded roughly 42% of the entire tokenized U.S. Treasury market.4 By February 2026, following some rebalancing in the Ethereum-based share class, AUM had settled at approximately $2.4 billion.5

Since inception, the fund has distributed over $100 million in cumulative dividends to token holders, with monthly payouts ranging from $4 million to $8 million depending on prevailing Treasury rates and total AUM.6

The fund's multi-chain expansion strategy was a significant driver of institutional adoption. Initially Ethereum-only, BUIDL expanded across nine blockchain networks through 2024 and 2025, including Solana, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Optimism, Aptos, and BNB Chain.7 Each new chain brought a new pool of institutional participants and DeFi protocols that could interface with the fund's tokenized shares.

3. DeFi Protocol Integrations: From Passive Yield to Active Infrastructure

What transformed BUIDL from a sophisticated money market instrument into a foundational piece of onchain financial infrastructure was its systematic integration into DeFi protocols.

The mechanism was not BUIDL itself, which remains a permissioned, whitelisted token, but a derivative structure built by Securitize: the sToken framework.

The sBUIDL Mechanism

Securitize's sToken vault technology converts BUIDL shares into sBUIDL, a composable ERC-20 token that is fully redeemable 1:1 for BUIDL shares at any time. Because sBUIDL follows the ERC-20 standard, it is compatible with the full DeFi smart contract ecosystem, which the underlying BUIDL token, as a permissioned, whitelisted security, is not.

This wrapper structure preserves the regulatory integrity of the underlying fund while unlocking its programmability for DeFi applications.

Euler Finance Integration (May 2025)

In May 2025, BlackRock and Securitize announced sBUIDL's first direct DeFi protocol integration with Euler Finance on the Avalanche blockchain, developed in partnership with Re7 Labs.8

Euler, described as a “lending super app,” is a modular, developer-focused DeFi lending protocol that gives institutions granular control over collateral requirements, liquidation parameters, and access permissions.

Under the integration, holders of sBUIDL can deposit their tokens as collateral on Euler's lending platform and borrow stablecoins including USDC and AUSD against that collateral. Crucially, borrowers retain the underlying yield generated by the BUIDL fund throughout the borrowing period, and Avalanche's DeFi incentive program added AVAX token rewards on top of that.9

The practical result is a multi-layered yield stack: Treasury yield from the underlying government securities, plus stablecoin liquidity obtained through borrowing, plus additional token rewards—all without disposing of the original BUIDL exposure.

Frax Finance: BUIDL as Stablecoin Collateral (January 2025)

In January 2025, the governance community of Frax Finance voted to accept BUIDL as backing collateral for the Frax-USD stablecoin (frxUSD).10 Rather than enabling individual holders to borrow against BUIDL, Frax incorporated it as a reserve asset at the protocol level, using BlackRock-backed government securities to improve the counterparty quality and liquidity profile of its stablecoin's backing.

Ethena USDtb: BUIDL as the Primary Reserve Asset

Ethena Labs launched USDtb, a yield-bearing stablecoin, in December 2024, with BUIDL comprising approximately 90% of its reserves.11 In June 2025, Ethena and Securitize extended this integration further, enabling 24/7 atomic swaps between BUIDL and USDtb through the USDtb Liquidity Fund.

USDtb grew to over $1 billion in total value locked by early 2025,12 effectively making BUIDL the backbone reserve of a major DeFi stablecoin at institutional scale.

Ondo Finance: BUIDL as Portfolio Backbone

Ondo Finance's OUSG product, one of the largest tokenized U.S. Treasury instruments outside of BUIDL itself, invests the majority of its assets directly into BUIDL.13 As of late 2025, OUSG held over $1.1 billion in total value locked, with BUIDL serving as its primary underlying asset.

Ethena's USDtb and Ondo's OUSG together represent the emergence of BUIDL as the reserve asset class underpinning an entire new layer of onchain financial products.

4. Exchange Collateral Acceptance

Parallel to the DeFi protocol integrations, BUIDL pursued acceptance as collateral on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges and derivatives platforms. This expanded BUIDL from a passive yield instrument into active trading infrastructure.

In June 2025, Securitize announced that Crypto.com and Deribit, two of the most active crypto derivatives exchanges globally, would accept BUIDL as off-exchange collateral for institutional trading.14 This structure allows institutional traders to post BUIDL tokens as margin backing for leveraged derivatives positions, while continuing to earn the underlying Treasury yield.

In November 2025, Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by volume, announced that it would accept BUIDL as off-exchange collateral for its institutional trading clients. A new BUIDL share class was simultaneously launched on BNB Chain, expanding the fund's blockchain footprint to nine networks.15

Michael Sonnenshein, COO at Securitize, characterized tokenized securities like BUIDL as “programmable productive capital,” distinguishing them from stablecoins not just as a place to store value but as assets that work while they wait.16

5. UniswapX Integration: The TradFi/DeFi Convergence Moment

The most symbolically significant development in BUIDL's evolution came on February 11, 2026, when BlackRock and Securitize announced that BUIDL shares would be available to trade via UniswapX, Uniswap Labs' offchain order routing and onchain settlement system.17

This marked BlackRock's first direct engagement with public DeFi trading infrastructure for any of its funds, and it came paired with a strategic investment by BlackRock in the Uniswap ecosystem, including the purchase of an undisclosed amount of UNI governance tokens.

The integration operates through Securitize Markets, which maintains a whitelist of pre-qualified institutional participants. Market makers including Flowdesk, Tokka Labs, and Wintermute compete through UniswapX's request-for-quote framework to fill BUIDL/USDC swap orders, with all trades settling atomically onchain through immutable smart contracts.

The result is 24/7 onchain liquidity for BUIDL against stablecoins, an improvement over the traditional redemption cycle that required submitting redemption requests during business hours with settlement on a T+1 basis.

BlackRock's Global Head of Digital Assets described it as “a major leap forward in the interoperability of tokenized USD yield funds with stablecoins.”18

Uniswap's UNI token surged approximately 20–25% on the announcement, reflecting the market's interpretation of the move as a structural, not merely symbolic, endorsement of public DeFi rails by institutional finance.

6. Market Impact and Key Takeaways

By the end of 2025, the broader market cap of tokenized public-market real-world assets had tripled to $16.7 billion,19 with BUIDL serving as what The Block's DeFi Outlook described as “the reserve asset underpinning a new class of onchain cash products.”

BUIDL's trajectory demonstrates several principles directly relevant to OWNR's thesis:

Tokenization is the entry point, not the destination.

BUIDL’s value was not that it digitized a Treasury fund. It was that doing so made the fund composable with an entire ecosystem of lending protocols, stablecoins, and trading venues that multiplied its utility far beyond a traditional money market product.

The yield-plus-DeFi stack is real and institutional.

The sBUIDL/Euler integration demonstrated that institutional-grade collateral can be used to generate layered yield—Treasury yield plus borrowing proceeds plus incentive rewards—without departing from a regulated, government-backed asset base. This is the architecture OWNR is building for MBS.

Permissioned assets can unlock permissionless ecosystems through wrapper structures.

The sToken framework solved the fundamental tension between regulatory compliance and DeFi composability. A compliant wrapper that preserves redeemability while enabling ERC-20 compatibility is the infrastructure pattern that makes regulated assets usable in open DeFi markets.

Infrastructure ownership compounds.

BUIDL became the reserve asset for Ethena’s USDtb, the primary holding of Ondo’s OUSG, and the margin collateral of choice on Deribit, Crypto.com, and Binance. None of those integrations required BlackRock to do additional work. The compounding network effect of infrastructure ownership is precisely the model OWNR is replicating for fixed income.

The market validated the TradFi × DeFi thesis.

BlackRock’s decision to make BUIDL tradeable on UniswapX, and to invest in Uniswap itself, is institutional confirmation that the convergence of regulated assets and public DeFi rails is not speculative. It is the direction of travel for the most sophisticated capital in the world.
